Poëzie is 1 van de sentimentaliteiten.
Sentimentaliteit lijkt me een bruikbaar uitgangspunt tot het maken van dingen. Wat men "het poëtisch gevoel" in een werk noemt, vind ik te algemeen, te vrijblijvend.
Men kan er teveel kanten mee uit. Daarentegen komt sentimentaliteit uit een taboe sfeer en windt er geen doekjes om. Te nemen of te laten. Daarbij is de enig toelaatbare poëzie tegenwoordig die van de natuur en haar elementen. (89)

Sentimentality seems to me a useful point of departure for the making of things. What is called 'the poetic sentiment' in a work, is to me too general, too informal. It serves too many purposes. Sentimentality on the other hand, comes from a taboo atmosphere and does not beat about the bush. Take it or leave it. Besides the only acceptable poetry today is that of nature and its elements.
